Mayport USO and Naval Station Mayport was visited by non-other than Chef Art Smith, Oprah’s Former Executive Chef, currently living in Jasper, FL. Chef Art Smith has several restaurants in the U.S. including one in Disney Springs, Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’. We took Chef Art on a tour to one of Naval Station Mayport’s Galley. At the Galley, he met with the kitchen staff that prepares the meals to our Navy’s finest. Chef Art spoke to them about how to properly menu plan and prepare dishes. Prepping three meals a day and feeding more than 200 people is a task. After the galley tour, we visited the beach and drove by the IWO JIMA. Chef Art was amazed!
We returned to the center and quickly started prepping for his famous fried chicken and summer salad. Prior to his arrival, the staff readied the chicken two days before as directed in his recipe. We invited 20 active– duty personnel to feast on his famous fried chicken and summer salad. As Chef Art started cooking, a few of the kitchen staff at Naval Station Mayport joined him in the kitchen. “Ask me anything”, he said. Smiles were all around the kitchen especially when the fried chicken was cooked. No one was talking only filling their stomachs with Chef Art’s famous fried chicken.
It’s safe to say everyone enjoyed the experience, including our excellent staff! Thank you Chef Art for sharing your comfort food with us.
We would also thank the Naval Station Mayport POA, Bill Austin & his staff for making such a quick turn around what we needed to visit.
